3.1 There were no public forum speakers at the 11 December 2023 meeting.
4. ITM Fire Acknowledgement
4.1 The board would like to say a massive thank you to our Tākaka Volunteer Firefighters, alongside those from other stations who did an amazing job of fight the recent fire at ITM and preventing it from spreading to other buildings and homes in Commercial Street. We are lucky to have such great people in our community. It was also fantastic to see the support that ITM and PGG Wrightson’s have received from the community. A big shout out to all the staff at these two businesses for all their hard work , and ensuring that they were back up and running as quickly as possible. You are awesome. In what was an extremely stressful and emotional time, you kept community at the heart. We appreciate you all.
5.1 Following the ITM fire on 11 January, Council identified a number of houses and workplaces in Motupipi Street that use bore water which could have been potentially contaminated by run-off from firefighting, with the area of focus being a cluster of properties around Motupipi Street. Residents in this area were contacted by Council staff, with bore water testing been occurring since 11 January.
5.2 Positive test results at three sample sites have been returned in relation to the ongoing monitoring of the Tākaka bore water following the fire at the ITM building site on 11 January 2024.
5.3 On the 22 January 2024 Council sampled for the following:
· BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes)
· Heavy metals
· Volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds
· Total petroleum hydrocarbons
· Arsenic, Boron, Cadmium, Copper, Lead, Manganese, Mercury
5.4 All the samples are compliant with the drinking water standards except for three sample sites that were found to have levels of Dichloromethane higher than the drinking water standard.
5.5 Council advice to refrain from drinking the water was expanded from the existing zone covering part of Motupipi Street to include the rest of Motupipi Street, Factory Road and the first section of Abel Tasman Drive (to Scotts Corner).
5.6 Dichloromethane (also known as Methylene Chloride) is a solvent widely used in chemical research, manufacturing, and cleaning agents.
5.7 Council are working with the laboratory, public health experts and environmental scientists to locate the source of Dichloromethane. While this positive test result is yet to be linked to the run-off from firefighting at the ITM building site on Thursday 11 January, staff are taking necessary precautions to ensure that the health of the community is not put in jeopardy.
5.8 Group Manager – Environmental Assurance (K Drummond) has indicated he hopes to provide updated information at the meeting.
6. Dangerous parking
6.1 Correspondence was received prior to Christmas regarding concern around unsafe parking practices at the Bainham store, which was passed to staff for investigation.
